All my Ideas for Making Goodreads 110% Better

Can Goodreads hire me? Because I have some fantastic ideas for making Goodreads a much more bookworm friendly website.
Now, Goodreads isn’t exactly always terrible but it could be much better. As in easier to use, easier to navigate, and easier to just do everything. Also, if we’re going to talk about this, remember the app is the actual worst. If I can help it, I never open the Goodreads app. SO, if that simple thing was updated and made more mobile friendly, Goodreads would already be 75% better.

Half-star ratings, please. Just give them to us!

You know we all want them. WHY are you holding out on us, Goodreads? How many times do you have to preface, this was really a 3.75 star read, but I’m rounding it up to 4 stars. Or when something just doesn’t deserve a star AT ALL but you HAVE to give it a full star.

Would including half star ratings really be THAT much work? It doesn’t seem like it and it would just so much improve the overall reviewing system.

all of us asking why we don’t have half star ratings

And it’s not like I’m the only one to ever suggest this idea. I see people mention how much they’d like to give a book a half star as part of their rating ALL the time! Somebody at Goodreads needs to get on board with this idea.

No MORE glitches. EVER.

Do you know how frustrating it is to try to open Goodreads and the website just doesn’t work. So frustrating. I don’t actually think I need to talk about this topic much. Because glitches are horrible anytime they happen anywhere.

Has anyone noticed how instagram keeps glitching? Maybe all these social media companies need to get together and figure out to to stop glitches once and for all. THANK YOU.

Being stuck with the 3 MAIN menus

Ok, I am sometimes really annoyed by the strict constraints of the 3 main menus. Read, To Read, and Currently Reading.

me, fussing about being stuck with these 3 menus

Can we not also have a Did Not Finish menu? Because I would super duper appreciate it. I mean, sometimes, I don’t finish a book. But I have to put it under the read menu so I can tell everyone that it’s a DNF.
But that messes up my reading quota for the year. This just annoys me. Please, please Goodreads fix this. Add a throw away pile.

Commenting just working better

This is what we ALL want. Fix the commenting system. If I’m no longer part of the conversation, I really, really don’t want to be getting notifications 8 years later.
If it’s not @ me, let me leave the thread. Don’t drag me back into another crazy conversation. I mean, it’s not like I DON’T like talking to people. It’s just I don’t have time to keep replying to comments that aren’t even addressed to me. And if I’m not replying, than why am I getting notifications?

me, trying to get out of looonnnggg comment threads on Goodreads

Website talking to the App better.

I’ve already kind of mentioned how annoying I find the app, but if this ONE thing about the app could get fixed, I would be extremely pleased.

Little notifications icons stay up even AFTER I checked the notifications on my computer.

And yes, I know I can just tell my I-phone to NOT show me notifications. BUT I want to see them when they come in. I just don’t want to keep seeing them days after I cleared them while I was logged in on my computer.

Images showing up. Instead of {Image Here}

IS this just a problem on my computer? I kind of can’t imagine that it is because I see it sooo much. Instead of an image showing, little brackets telling me there’s a missing picture.

Loading images into reviews is hard enough. (can they fix that too?) And then for them not to show up in the actual reviews is just FRUSTRATING.

Being More Internationally Friendly

Now, I am a privileged blogger because  A) I live in America B) work and can sometimes afford a book and C) live close to a fantastic library system.

Not everyone is as privileged!!! And Goodreads should work for readers, instead of discriminating against international book lovers. Book giveaways should be more accessible for the international community.

I am definitely NOT the only person to ever say this. Marie and May have both shared about blogger privileges and how Goodreads has contributed to stigmatizing international book bloggers.

So maybe this is kind of ranting long post, but I’v been sick with a cold, so I had lots of time to think about how to improve Goodreads while I was drinking hot tea and taking vitamin C. Though I was too sick to write and publish this post on time…(I really hate how being sick throws me off my schedule :-/)

But what’s funny is I first drafted this post in March, so it’s been sitting in my drafts for over FIVE MONTHS. I kept writing it down in my calendar to finish and publish, and it kept not happening.

All that Changed today! I have finally conquered this post and announced my plans to magically amend Goodreads for the future enjoyment of the entire book reading and blogging world. You’re welcome.

Also, yes, there are plenty of things I do like about Goodreads. But that is NOT what today’s post is about, okay?

lets chat

Do you ever get frustrated with Goodreads? What would do you want to fix on the site?

How long have you used Goodreads and do you have any favorite things about the site?

YES to so many of the things you pointed out in this post! I think I’ve used Goodreads for like 5 years?? I don’t know haha. It’s been awhile! I’m an international bookworm and I wish giveaways were more accessible too. I also don’t understand the commenting system. I think half star ratings would be helpful too and if users didn’t want to give a half star rating..they wouldn’t need to make use of that option. It just seems like a win win either way.

    • September 12, 2018 / 8:52 pm

Woah, 5 years is a long while! I’ve been active on GR for around 2 years, so I’m practically a newbie compared to you, haha!
And yes, I totally think GR should work hard to be more accessible to international readers and host giveaway for every country. And half star ratings would be so nice!

    Preach girl!

I would actually love if they updated the stats page. What’s on their is great, but it would be cool if they could also show you things like gender of the author you’ve read, nationality of the author you’ve read, which country the book was first published in. I feel like this would encourage so many more of us to read diversely (and easily keep track of it as well)!

Hope you feel better soon. 🙂

    • September 12, 2018 / 8:53 pm

Oh, I love the idea for the stats page! I know some people are able to keep on top of all those stats on their own, but I am not. :-/ It would be so much easier to keep track of!
And thank you, I’ve been sleeping most of the past 3 days, and I’m starting to feel a bit better!

  3. September 11, 2018 / 1:43 pm

AHH. You can create an exclusive bookshelf for DNFs! When you create the shelf, I believe there’s a button that says “make exclusive” and it makes it top-level like Want to Read, Currently Reading, and Read. I think I have 6 or 7!

The image thing isn’t just you. 🙁 I also don’t like how I have to log in to GR a gazillion times? Every time I navigate away from GR, even if I go back in the same window, I have to log in AGAIN. :'( That may just be a me!problem, though. XD

    • September 12, 2018 / 8:54 pm

I didn’t know this! But several other people commented about it, so now I do, thanks!!!
And yes, logging in is sooooo annoying. 🙁 Especially when I disconnected my account from FB, boy, was that a headache!!!

  4. September 11, 2018 / 2:23 pm

OH YES. I would LOVE it if there were actually half star ratings, it would make my life so much easier! It frustrates me so much whenever I have to choose between 3 and 4 when I just want to put 3,5, I spend way too long thinking about this dilemma before finally picking one rating haha.
I really wish that goodreads would be more international friendly just as well (thank you so much for sharing my post about that, by the way, you’re too sweet <3 <3). It was already hard to see how so little giveaways were open to international residents, but now with their policies changes and everything, it is just less and less international friendly and it is so sad :/
This was such a wonderful post <3 <3

    • September 12, 2018 / 8:56 pm

I totally get that dilemma! I want to give books 3.5 ratings, all the time!!!
It is so sad to see so many different websites working against international readers. It really is upsetting! And your post deserves to be shared 🙂 Thanks!

  5. September 11, 2018 / 3:30 pm

Okay, I love Goodreads, but it has SO many problems, and if just THESE THINGS could happen, that’d be nice, thanks. Also, the GR app almost never works for me. 🙁 So yeah, let’s fix those!

    • September 12, 2018 / 8:57 pm

Yes! Let’s band together and get them to fix the GR app!!!

i am going to print this out and mail it to goodreads i swear. amazing post!!! my favorite/least-favorite hellsite.

    • September 12, 2018 / 8:58 pm

Oh, haha! Yes, let’s mail it and/or nail it to their front door 😂

  7. September 11, 2018 / 6:58 pm

There is a way to make an exclusive DNF list! It comes in really handy on the odd occasion that I give up on a book.

My biggest pet peeve with Goodreads right now is that mass editing just refuses to work. I’ve got duplicate copies of books on my to read shelf for some reason (some that i’ve actually already read too) and trying to purge titles from that shelf is a total nightmare because the mass edit thingy just doesn’t work and going through them one by one either on desktop or in the app takes a million years >.<

AND THE IMAGES NOT WORKING DRIVES ME NUTS!! I use the app about 98% of the time to update my progress and every time I go to put an image into my updates, it doesn't accept the html code. But for some reason it's only on the app, it works fine on desktop 🙃

    • September 12, 2018 / 9:06 pm

I’m just now hearing about this exclusive DNF shelf, thank you for telling me!!!
And editing bookshelves is so tedious and annoying, definitely not my fav part of working on the website. And can we not fix the app to accept images?!?! 😌

  8. September 12, 2018 / 1:55 am

    Literally this whole post!
Especially the half star ratings and being more intrnationally friendly!

    • September 12, 2018 / 9:06 pm

Yes! Let’s make the book world more internationally friendly for every website…looking at you Edelweiss & Netgalley…😌

  9. September 12, 2018 / 7:16 am

I actually really like that Goodreads only allows whole stars – I’m so indecisive! Plus I’d have to change every single 3000+ star rating and that would take TIME.
But I agree with the rest of your points 🙂 I have an exclusive DNF shelf set up (Bookshelves > edit > exclusive) but it still counts the book as “read” for my challenge even if they’re not on the read shelf.

That makes sense! I think half star ratings would work well because not everyone would have to use them, but you could if you wanted to!
And that’s annoying that it still counts DNFs as read! Ergh! 😌

I agreeee so much! I need halfstars and the [image] thing annoys me too (also like can we just be able to have more options for the reviews?! Like I want to centre text and make it bigger etc…) And I HATE the comment system! It’s hard to have a continuing conversation on there and most of the time I don’t even want to comment because I’ll be hit with 3989 other people’s replies. 😭

However, good news, I think I can help with the 3 main menu shelves!! If you go to My Books –> and then the top of your list of bookshelves there’s a little (edit) button? Then you get all your shelves listing and I think you can change what’s your “exclusive” top 3 main shelves!! Hope that helps and works!

  11. September 13, 2018 / 5:40 pm

I love your recommendations! I have a love-hate relationship with Goodreads and try not to use it unless I have to for reviews. It would be great to have more than the standard 3 shelves. And don’t even get me started on that app! Haha. Hopefully, Goodreads will read your post and make some much needed changes. 🙂

  12. September 14, 2018 / 12:51 pm

Obviously we are all IN SO MUCH NEED of half-star ratings. We readers are really indecisive people, and half-star ratings would make life so much better! You can technically make a DNF main menu by making your shelf “exclusive”. 🙂 AND OMG YES THE COMMENTING SYSTEM! I hate it. Hate hate hate. I find it really bothersome to the point that I usually opt not to leave comments, even on reviews I do like. I would love to be able to have sub-replies, or yes, the ability to @ people and only get them notified! Fantastic post, lovely. 😘

  13. September 16, 2018 / 11:01 am

YES, a did not finish shelf would be great. Or having the ability to put shelves inside shelves, like how Pinterest created the organize board option.

  14. September 19, 2018 / 10:02 am

Oh yes someone should really hire you for Goodreads! I totally agree with the half-star system, everyone is practically begging for it so why are they holding out on us ugh.

Omg yes I agree! We need to get half star ratings and add a DNF shelf! And I would love to see spoilers in the app because most of the time, I have to look in my computer and it can get annoying! And also if they could organize your books by genre that would be great because I don’t want to make multiple shelf’s for multiple genres. I should trust the app to do that

Drop some knowledge!
