August Wrap-Up and September Plans

Wow! This summer is coming to a rapid close, in the last few hours my life has been swamped in homework. Brutal reminder I’m back at school. In fact, I have 50 pages of reading due Friday afternoon, so right after writing this, I’ll get to some textbook reading.

percy jackson and the lightening thief My first August read was Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief. Such a fun read! I forced myself to read it over two days, and I really enjoyed the story and writing style. Why did it take me so long to get around to reading this series?*

I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the Percy Jackson books this fall.

And I read several ARCs. Hit the Ground Running, Heir of Illaria, and Spin the Golden Lightbulb. I’m actually halfway through Spin the Golden Lightbulb, so that review should be coming out soon!

*I should really offer apologies to everyone who kept telling me to read Percy Jackson. Yes, I should have listened a long time ago!

I ran into some excellent blog posts this month! Here’s just a few:

From Ilsa @ A Whisper of Ink – A thoughtful discussion on representation in book. Can you be truly represented?

Cait @ Paper Fury shares how blogging makes life just a bit weird. #onpoint

Mikaela @ The Well Thumbed Reader discusses why we write reviews. Who is even reading our book reviews? Who are reviews actually for?

Please share your favorite blog posts from August in the comments! I’d love to check them out!

Actually, I’m most disappointed in how little time I actually had to read! Between finishing up in Philadelphia, traveling to Texas, and then back to South Carolina for the semester, I had very little free time. I have a couple of ARCs I’d still like to read, so I’m hoping to catch up on them in September as well.

I also was pretty let down by some of the ARCs I read. I reviewed a couple this month, but I was most disappointed with Heir of Illaria.

And finally, I was terribly, incredibly disappointed with Taylor Swift’s new song. It’s horrible. Both the style and lyrics. While I’ve never been a Swiftie, I typically enjoy her music. But the new single is just flat-out terrible.

tower of dawnTower of Dawn releases September 5th! I’ve preordered this novel, and I’m looking forward to reading it! Who isn’t in love with Chaol?

I’m also planning on getting a library card, and checking out the Greenville County Library. Yeah for more books!

I also just picked up Wonder Woman: Warbringer. I’ve read about the first three chapters, and I’m pretty sure I’ll finish this book in the next week or two. It’s super interesting so far, I already have a dozen questions! You can follow my reading on Goodreads for updates on Wonder Woman. And other books, too.

And I’m definitely planning on keeping up with Top 5 Tuesday this month! I’m very excited for our topics this month, especially discussing which modern books we consider classics. As you can imagine, I’m pretty opinionated about that! Though really, when am I not opinionated?

Cool weather is coming, hoorah!!! Sweaters, scarves, and pumpkins! I dread winter chill, but Autumn is special. Looking forward to red and yellow leaves, and rainy reading days.

Drumroll… I saved my favorite for last! Sabaa Tahir recently announced her books have a new set of covers! I think they are beautiful! Tahir updated her books to reflect the amazing diversity in her story.

I read An Ember in the Ash in May before leaving for China, and I really enjoyed it. The plot was a bit slow, but I thought the characters were incredible. I haven’t read the sequel, but I’ve decided I do want to check it out. Especially when I heard how the story evolves and incorporates some of my favorite characters from An Ember in the Ash.

And the third in Tahir’s series comes out in 2018, A Reaper at the Gates. Am I Excited for this? Of course! Though, I definitely need to read A Torch Against the Night. But if I read it now, I’m setting myself up for months of turmoil

I mean, the cliffhanger at the end of the first book was bad enough! #decisions Wait till an entire series is published or read the books as they are released?

let's chat

Do you like Taylor Swift’s new song? Or are you just as weary of every new song being part of endless celebrity feuds?

What was your favorite part of August?

And finally, what are you most anticipating in September?

I’m torn about series reading. On one hand I love being able to read through the story without interruption. On the other, I don’t want to wait to read the book. It’s a clear struggle!
