Lots Cold & Very Busy / January 2019 Wrap Up

I can’t believe that we’re all basically done with the first month of the year!!!! What happened to long winter nights and cozying up with blankets and just breathing the first month of the year. Well, none of THAT happened. Well, I did breathe some.

This month was a train wreck. because yours truly dealt with the flu and my internship started and lots of homework. And the government was shut down and politics wouldn’t leave me alone. Opps. ALSO IT GOT WAY TOO COLD. That’s the truth.

But I also grew as a person and learned tons this month. And I read books and listened to new favorite music and started plotting my new fav WIP. Life’s great, ya’ll.

I read eight books this month! And while my goal is 12 books a month, this month had a lot going on. I mean, the flu knocked me out for nearly an entire week. I’m pretty sure if I had the week back without getting sick, I’d have totally read 12 books.

Shatter Me – this was errrrrrmmmmmm, okay? I was expecting something better but it just wasn’t. I’m committed to reading this series because I want to review it. And because people rave about the newer books. But it feels so twilight-esque in this first book.

White Stag – a GREAT debut! It was dark and full of norse mythology and fun spunk. While I really liked the action and story, there were a couple weird moments. Such as all the modern language? super confusing.

Muse of Nightmares – Well, here’s the most unpopular opinion, ever. I just didn’t enjoy this book. Apparently. Laini Taylor’s writing is just very hit and miss for me. I LOVED strange the Dreamer but I just didn’t care for this. which reminds me of how I felt of her other series, daughter of Smoke and Bone. Not my fav, though I could read it. Anyway, muse of Nightmares was just not as magical for me as I hoped.

Just For Clicks – this was fun! And I actually wrote a review, so check it out. 🙂

The Wicked King – I LOVED IT SO MUCH! Such a PERFECT sequel. Also, i wrote a review! Since I wrote a review for the first book in the series, I’m so proud of myself for actually writing a review for it’s sequel, too!

Dear Jane – Um, this was just terrible. It was way too triggering without any warning and overall awful.

Magnus Chase and The Hammer of Thor – another Rick Riordan FAVORITE! Literally, all of his books are my favorites.

The Dead Queen’s Club – this was SO FUN! It’s a retelling on Henry the 8th and his six wives … in high school! it’s hilarious and so dramatic and perfect.

May worked SO HARD on her blogger survey post and it’s amazing!!!

YARC reading challenge I first saw Lily’s post so I decided to share her post here! Also, lily is one of my fav bloggers 💕 I do love the other hosts, though, they’re totally amazing!

You’ve probably guessed that I loved Dead Queen’s Club and Vicky did too, and I love this author interview on her blog!!! It’s hilarious.

Cait shared some secrets from her debut novel and we are blessed. I mean, Cait’s the best.

I really want to do this new book tag that Olivia created! PS. It’s a Taylor Swift book tag!!!!

Tiffany shared some under appreciated fantasy books that are perfect for fantasy newbies!

I’ve been working on a few writing projects this month. I wanted to do A LOT of editing BUT ya’ll know ya girl got the flu. And in between starting my internship and school and blogging, well there wasn’t much time to write.
I mean, i could get up an hour earlier everyday to write… but I have not been THAT inspired.

Anyway, I’ve been working on round 1 edits for my contemporary WIP.  It’s been mostly fun and I have some ideas that I’d like to work into the story.

Honestly, this book has been HARD to write/edit. It’s kind of exhausting to work on? which isn’t always true about all my writing projects. but this specific story is really hard to write.
I think it’s because it’s contemporary? it’s challenging to write in today’s setting because I fret over how real the story sounds and the details and conversations and just worry over the writing 😭

And I just don’t do that with my fantasy or historical fiction writing? Ergh, it’s hard.

Anyway, in the middle of these edits/redrafting, I’m very ACTIVELY working on my Augustus Caesar retelling!!! And maybe it’s because my contemporary story is hard work right now, but I’m struggling to just not drop everything and work completely on this story 😂

Now, my biggest concern for this story is all the PLOT! Guys, there’s so much plot. It’s all politics. And maybe dragons. And oracles. I mean, cool. But SO MUCH PLOT.

I’m still working on figuring out the emotional arc. This is the problem when you set out to do an Augustus Caesar retelling. his life is full of politics. Which equals lots and lots of plot.

But the most fun part? The WORLD BUILDING. I am making this a historical fantasy. Which means I’m definitely adding dragons.

Well, January was just full of life stuff. I started my internship at a local news station and I’m LOVING it. It’s SO FUN to actually do what I’ve been studying for 4 years. Also, hanging in a newsroom is just cool. Journalism is amazing, ya’ll.

And I also managed to watch a ton of Netflix? I tend to watch Netflix while I’m blogging so multitasking for the win.

I am ashamed to admit that I had not listened to Swift’s new album. Like, I checked out the singles and they were pretty meh, so I hadn’t bothered to check out the rest of the album.
Guys, I’ve repented. This album is GOLD and I wasted an entire year not picking it up. I LOVED the Reputation tour on Netflix and I’ve been listening to the album non-stop since.

And yes, Reputation has now interrupted my weekly Hamilton listening so you know it has to be REALLY good.

I was excited when I saw the new season of Medici dropped! This is probably my fav medieval show. It’s just so good and I LOVE the casting!

and another cool thing, the second season follows the actual history SO CLOSELY. They don’t really have to change up anything because the real history of the Pazzi conspiracy is so dramatic!

I mean, who isn’t watching Tidying Up??? it’s MAGICAl and so HAPPY??? I just love it. Except I can’t really watch it and do other stuff… so …. I don’t get to watch it as much as I’d like.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion? But I didn’t like Arianna Grande’s 7 Rings. At all. It was just weird and kind of twisted up one of my fa classic songs. Also, it felt too much braggadocios and full of yourself. Hoping the overall album is better. It comes out NEXT month so WE’LL SEE!

I am actually super surprised that I managed to get blogging done in January! Other than my week with the flu, I kept to my posting schedules.

My monthly blogging goals are eight posts a month and yep, yep, yep, it HAPPENED! so proud of myself.

Okay, so my QOOAD Review was published LAST YEAR, or just last month, but people keep reading it! I think that’s cool. It literally has SO MANY VIEWS. I guess people like talking about Cassie Clare’s books. (looks at my Cassie Clare Characters Playlist post which totally bombed, sadness)

And then my next two most popular posts were all about my 2019 plans. I think we all love these kind of posts? so not super surprised! You guys definitely challenged me with some of your goals! cheering for all of you!

I’m super proud of myself for actually writing book reviews this month! My goal is to write three book reviews a month and it happened!

GUYS!!! I am ready for February! Did you know my birthday is in FEBRUARY???? It’s MY month. Also, I have lots of COOL plans!

I really hope to edit my WIP OR just work on my new book idea. I mean, the dragons are literally screaming my name so i might have to go work on that.

Also, I’m participating in two reading challenges! Fierce Female Reads and The Booktube Games! It’s going to be fun!

Along with all the amazing books I hope to read, I have some EXCITING ideas for blog posts. I started drafting a post on villains and I have a post on fierce female characters and a writing post idea…. SO MANY GREAT PLANS.

Anyway, guys, I hope your 2019 started well! I need to go work on my psych homework and maybe get some sleep. See ya’ll in February!

And right before i hit publish, Shadowhunters trailer dropped! Season 3 hits in February – another reason to love my month!

I hope you’re feeling better already! I didn’t love 7 Rings either, the melody didn’t grab me and the lyrics were meh. I’ve been wanting to start Medici, I’ve heard so many amazing things about the show!

  2. February 1, 2019 / 3:10 pm

I love Taylor Swift, so I listened to Reputation as soon as I could! I’ve been fascinated by Tidying Up. Not so much for me, but seeing my friends go full gusto has been awesome!

We have our first blood drive of 2019 at our church tomorrow, then the Super Bowl on Sunday! If anything, we watch for the commercials!

    1) Augustus Caesar retelling is SO interesting and I’m realllly wanting to hear more about it because omg my Anthropologist heart is in love! We need more of these types of retellings in our lives.

    2) We’ve gotten a HUGE cold snap on the west coast of Canada and I know it is soooo not a big deal to be in -5’s ish but I HAD TO TAKE MY PLANTS INSIDE BECAUSE THEY WERE DYING FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER so eeeeek!

    3) Heartwarming story: Our local Salvation Armies actually wrote a letter into our newspaper saying thank you to Marie Kondo’s show because since it dropped on Netflix, donations are up like 125%! Doesn’t that totally warm your heart?! And also speak to how many of us live for Netflix lol.

    4) Sorry to hear about your flu uggh the worst! I haven’t gotten one this winter which is SO STRANGE because I’m immune compromised and literally catch everything ever. Hopefully you’re feeling better now!

I really enjoy the Shatter Me series, but definitely think Ignite Me is the best one out of the main trilogy. The first book isn’t my favorite, but the rest of the series really gets better! I also suggest reading the novellas because they bridge the stories together.

Sorry about being sick and all of the hectic stuff but I hope you’re doing better now and february is treating you good! I think i gave strange the dreamer 3 stars? THE BOOK COULD HAVE BEEN 200 PAGES SHORTER I SWEAR *cough* anYWAYS – the instalove annoyed me too. but it was pretty interesting and i will read the second book sometime when i feel like tackling a behemoth lol! i… don’t really like taylor or ariana??? *hides* i have to change the radio when either of their songs come on cause i just don’t like them anymore haha. tidying up w/ marie kondo is the most wholesome show i swear.

Drop some knowledge!
