Matching Your Favorite Books with Marvelous TV Shows

Do you like reading? Do you like watching TV? Then have I got a blog post for you! (If you’ve ever watched Veggietales, this sounds vaguely familiar, right?)

Anyway, I’ve thought really hard and paired some favorite (and not so favorite) tv shows with book series. I’ve been working on this post for a while, because I think it’s funny? And because it’s summer and time to watch Netflix.

Major brain work, guys! But I think this turned into a pretty great list? And some of them were obvious pairs and not too much brain work.

An Ember in the Ashes – Game of Thrones

I mean both Ember and Thrones are epic, cruel series. You cheer for your favorites, the commandant is pure evil, slaves are treated badly, and then your favorites are (probably) killed. Sheer torture. I think Sabaa Tahir and George R.R Martin went to “how to torture readers” school.

But you still keep reading (and watching) because the story is soooooo good.

me, thinking I’m ready to reread An Ember in the Ashes.

Throne of Glass – Reign

I kind of feel these two series are similar? Both veeerrrryyyyyy dramatic. And both feature a queen whose throne has been kind of, sort of stolen. One might have a worse ending, but we’ll have to wait a few months to be absolutely certain. Of course, all the Aelin fans HOPE she has a better ending than Mary Stuart.

Also, both main gals date several different guys? I’m pretty sure the French Prince is basically Dorian’s life inspiration.

Am I saying Maeve is Elizabeth Tudor? I don’t know. I like Queen Elizabeth. We both have red hair, ok? I’m kind of forced to defend Queens named Elizabeth.

The Song of Achilles – Troy, Fall of a City

This is kind of an obvious comparison? Both stories are taken directly from Ancient Greek literature. And while the Troy Netflix series is not quite just like Song of Achilles, I think it’s pretty good. And the series has an incredible ending. And I think they’re going to continue it with the Odyssey and Aenead. Which might mean we get to see some of Circe’s story. So you get lots and lots of Greek mythology.

Also, the acting is super good! Hector is amazing. Odysseus is phenomenal. And Paris is annoying as ever. And if you enjoyed the background of the gods squabbling in the Song of Achilles, Troy definitely has a lot of commentary from Zeus, Athena, Aphrodite and Hera. Zeus is just amazing and Athena is always pretty cool.

The Lunar Chronicles – Once Upon a Time

Ok, I’m super excited! This show and series go together SO WELL. And I just realized this and it’s just perfect! Because both are Fairy tale retellings!

Ok, so Evil Queen Regina in OUAT is very much like Levana. Just as hateable and dead-set on getting her vengeance on the entire world.

And Emma Swan reminds me of Cinder A LOT! She’s missing and is the key to fixing the kingdom.

Anyway, I have only watched the first season, so I can’t speak for the entire series. But the first season definitely reminds me of The Lunar Chronicles!

Simonverse Books – Glee OR Queer Eye

Simon and the crew need a happy show. Something lighthearted, diverse and super fun! Glee makes perfect sense. But also Queer Eye? I mean Queer Eye is based in Atlanta. It feels like the ultimate Simon Vs the Homosapiens Agenda kind of show. They just need to stop at a Waffle House sometime.

But Glee has a singing group of high schoolers. And Simon is in school musicals and loves music. This is hard to choose!

Instead of choosing, I’ll just suggest both.

Percy Jackson – The Office

I just feel like the humor in this book & show goes together. Ok? It’s kind of weird because the Office is very different from the world of Percy Jackson. But the style of the show reminds me of the narrative style of Rick Riordan’s books.

The thing about the Office is, the episodes are SUPER SHORT. And the office manager reminds me so much of Mr. D at Camp Halfblood. Though he also reminds me of Percy sometimes, too. And Pam and Jim are super cute just like Percy and Annabeth.

Six of Crows – Riverdale

Now, I haven’t watched this entire show. Only about the first 8 episodes of the first season. But the friendship and mystery kind of remind me of Ketterdam and the dregs. And Betty and Veronica really remind me of Inej and Nina.

And while I was thinking about this show, I found this gif. And it really reminds me of Kaz, haha!

So, that’s all the books and shows I’ve put together today. I’m sitting here typing this and staring at my bookshelf. And thinking about ALL the SERIES I haven’t suggested. Such as The Infernal Devices and A Darker Shade of Magic and The Raven Boys and the Illuminae Files.

There’s also a ton of tv shows I didn’t mention. The Crown, House of Cards, and Masters of Florence… and Scandal, and Madame Secretary, and This is Us. Ok, so I might watch a lot of different shows? But I’m also terrible at actually finishing the show.

Of all the shows I mentioned, I’ve only actually watched ALL of Troy. It’s just hard to sit down and watch an entire season of anything. Especially when there are books to read.

lets chat

What are some of your favorite shows? Agree with any of the shows and books I matched up? Disagree?

What shows would you match with your favorite books?

I love this! I just started watch Glee, and I’m hoping to soon read Simon Vs., so I was really happy to see that pairing. 🙂 Another one of my favorite shows is Gilmore Girls, so I’m trying to think of a good mother-daughter book relationship to pair with it, but I honestly can’t think of one. XD Anyway, great post!

Hahaha, Veggietales! Ooh, I would have never though of putting the Office with Percy Jackson, but from what I’ve heard about that show, I love the pairing. That makes me want to watch the Office even more now. Hm, I don’t watch many shows and I can’t think of any combinations, but I love this list!

Ah I love this! I feel like the early ToG books are like Reign, but with more assassins and killing. And Once Upon A Time and The Lunar Chronicles go perfectly together!! I only watched the first season a realllyyy long time ago but I want to start over and try to stick with it this time! And I get what you’re saying with The Office and PJO–they’re both really funny and Percy definitely has a similar sense of humor. If you have any more pairings you should definitely make a pt 2!
