Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag 2018 // I’m actually not really freaking out?

Happy mid-year! Summer solstice has officially come and gone, and I’m now melting in 90+ days. And I’m serious about the melting. As a redhead, the sun is my personal enemy. Fighting sun stroke and all that great stuff is a never ending battle.

Along with mid year, I’ve taken a small breathing break to chat about my mid-year reading life! Some quick facts about my 2018 reading habits.

  • I’ve read 63 books so far. Or 24,847 pages.
  • The Longest book was Winter at 827 pages.
  • The oldest book I’ve read was the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan
  • I’ve read 25 five-star reads!

Even though this is called Mid-Year freak out, I’m actually kind of happy about my current reading status. So not exactly freaking out. More just happy flails that I’ve been able to read a ton of books!

Now, let’s get started on the mid-year freak out tag questions! Books and Ravens and Purely Olivia both tagged me to do this tag!

Best book you’ve read so far this year

I think Mark of Athena is my favorite, ever of all of Rick Riordan’s books. I loved the character development and the story so much! In fact, I may want to go reread this right now. It’s hard to pick an absolute favorite for an entire year. And the question didn’t demand a new 2018 published fav, so I decided to go with a first read for me, even if it was published several years ago.

Best sequel you’ve read so far this year

I’ve not entirely sure I’ve read that many sequels so far this year? I’ve been reading a ton of series and I’m not sure if the third or fourth or fifth book in a series counts as a sequel? (Can someone tell me pleeeasseee)

After some thought, I think my favorite sequel I read this year was A Torch Against the Night. I still haven’t picked up Reaper, but I love this series. And the sequel was AMAZING. There’s also several ones coming out later in 2018 that I am very excited for.

Oh, oh, oh!!! I just picked up A Reaper at the Gates yesterday and I’ve already read 100 pages and it’s sooo good!

New release you haven’t read yet, but want to

I actually picked up Dread Nation on audible and have been meaning to listen to it. Just so behind on listening time!

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

There’s several releases that I am so excited for! I can’t just pick one.

Muse of Nightmares

Queen of Air and Darkness

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy

Biggest disappointment

Furyborn & The Hazel Wood. I was so looking forward to these two books and they just weren’t good? Maybe even a touch terrible. I’m a pretty generous reviewer (in my opinion) so it takes quite a bit of problems for a book to be super disappointing.

Biggest surprise

Renegades was by far the biggest surprise. Most everyone I know who had read it, didn’t really like it. And I actually loved it. A lot. I was reading it on a road trip and just kept reading it because I enjoyed it so, so much.

I’m actually really looking forward to publishing a review for this book because I just enjoyed it so much!

Favorite new author (debut or new to you)

Marissa Meyer! I started Cinder this year and have completely fallen in love with the Lunar Chronicles. And now Renegades was sooooo good and I can’t wait to read more of her books.

Newest fictional crush

Carswell Thorne. Need I say more? Cress and Thorne are the most adorable OTP, ever.

Newest favorite character

Probably Percy from the Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. I just adore this sweet guy and his attitude towards life. I mean, being biracial in the 18th century wasn’t easy. And I can’t say more because it would spoil the story, but Percy doesn’t let the prejudice of the time define his life. He’s also the sweetest, most loyal friend.

And Mackenzie Lee named him after Sir Percy from the Scarlet Pimpernel?!!! That made me just fall in love even more with Percy.

Book that made you cry

They Both Die at the End. Or any of Adam Silvera’s books. I think his trademark is making people cry.

Book that made you happy

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. it was just so sweet? And I adored the setting and the writing style. I can’t wit to read more from this author because I like the poetic way he writes.

Favorite review you’ve written this year

So, I really love my rant reviews, hah! I think they’re funny and well-written. Especially my rant about Furyborn.

Though I am planning on publishing some pretty fantastic reviews coming up soon!

Most beautiful book you’ve bought (or received) so far this year

Children of Blood and Bone its downright gorgeous. I’ve picked up a lot of pretty books this year but I really think Tomi Adeyami’s debut novel is the prettiest book I own.

What book do you need to read by the end of the year?

All the books? There are practically SO MANY! Why is this even an actual question? Because how can any reader just list one book as an answer?

Instead, just go look at my Goodreads TBR list. Be warned – there’s a 149 books on the list!

lets chat

Wow! That was a ton of questions and lots of work to remember all my answers and thoughts about books this year. I think my favorites switch every couple of books I read, and it’s tricky to keep up with new books and new fav characters and authors!

Also, I know a ton of people have already done this tag, but if you haven’t, feel free to steal if from me and share your mid-year freak out thoughts!

I’m so glad you loved A Torch Against The Night so much, I haven’t picked up that sequel just yet, but I am so, very excited to read it now!
I’m also really happy to hear you liked Renegades so much – I have heard a lot of mixed reviews about that one, and I loved Marissa Meyer’s other series, sooooo… I really don’t know what to do. I think I’ll try it out though because well, the fact that you loved it so much makes me sooo curious 🙂
    Happy reading! 🙂
