Rain & Coffee & Reading // September 2018 Wrap Up

I wasn’t sure what expect of September? But it’s actually been pretty amazing. Maybe that’s because reading helps me stay emotionally stable, as in the crazier my life is, the more I NEED to read.

So, in the middle of this crazy semester beginning, I’ve read quite a bit. EIGHT WHOLE BOOKS! And written a lot of blog posts. (don’t ask about my actual fiction writing, because that is not happening, currently. Blame college)

My Plain Jane –  ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was SO FUNNY! And it was a buddy read with Mal, which was perfect. Also, we even wrote a review you should totally check out!

Girl Made of Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Such a beautiful book and heartbreaking story. It resonated SO MUCH with me and everyone NEEDS to read this story.

A List of Cages⭐️⭐️⭐️ Gah, another heartbreaking story. Apparently this is the month for heartbreaking stories.

Nice Try, Jane Sinner ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 Humorous, coming of age college story. Took a while to get into it, but it was a fun read!

Now I Rise –  ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ WHAT A SEQUEL. Totally blew my expectations away. Radu is my sweet son forever. Mehmed can go throw himself into the Mediterranean and I would be very happy if Lada wasn’t a part of this story.

Blood and Sand –  ⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Gender Swapped Spartacus with weird Roman history that was very confusing. Because I knew Vespasian was an actual Emperor, and they didn’t conquer Jerusalem and Britain at the SMAE TTIME. And Spartacus was not at all alive during Pompeii? SO I was just confused and this was weird timeline twisting.

A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares – What a fun read! I’m about 3/4 of the way done with this book and really enjoying it so far! I except to be done with this by October first. Check back for an update. 🙂

Toil and Trouble ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wow, this is an incredible anthology. I don’t often read anthologies but I am very happy to have read this one! I even managed to write individual reviews for each short stories on my Goodreads review.

Olivia talked about annotating books! This was such a fun post! I’m terrible at actually annotating books even though I really want to, haha.

Lily @ Sprinkles of Dreams talks about Why We Need Confident Female Characters. I completely agree with this post!

Elise shared some of her favorite booktubers and I LOVE this post. Some of my favorite booktubers are included in her post, as well as some new people that I’ve definitely enjoyed watching!

I love the Queens of Infamy series by Anne Thériault. Her new one is on Catherine de Medici, and I can’t wait for part 2!!!

I mean, who doesn’t want to read a funny essay about this kind of queen?

Okay, let’s talk about this month and life. It’s been a HARD month. I love the start of the school year and getting into the swing of classes and life.

And this year, there’s the added bonus of being in charge of our campus TV station. It’s a ton of work, but so far, I really, really enjoy my work.

What hasn’t been so great are a couple of my classes. I’m in an argumentation and debate class, and that class is so emotionally taxing. I might have written a post about difficult topics in books because of the white privilege I’m literally arguing about in every single class period. It’s just so hard, especially with the American news cycle concerning sexual assault and accusations. As a survivor of sexual assault, it is just upsetting to engage with people who discount women as political fodder.

I know, I know, I’m in a class about literally arguing. But arguing about basic human decency? It’s EXHAUSTING. So emotionally draining.

…My face constantly this month…

We finally settled on a semester long debate topic, and it’s implementing a national living wage. I’m a fan of raising the minimum wage to a living wage for all Americans. But my classmates are definitely NOT fans, and just consider this idea a socialistic agenda.

So, we’re going to be debating this topic. And I’m trying really, really hard to not take my classmates attitudes personally, but it is DIFFICULT.

But at least I convinced people NOT to make our debate topic free speech on college campuses and how universities shouldn’t be banning Milo. Yes, that was literally the second most popular topic. Ergh.

Besides this debate class, I’m also in my final religion classes. They’re a tad bit hard, especially all the required reading. But at least I’m not constantly having to argue. Just sit and listen to the lecture and stay alive for the next 12 weeks. Great motto, right?

Oh, but my news videos have been very fun lately! Check out this video on local coffee shops in my college town. It was a ton of work, having to visit all these coffee shops BUT it was SO FUN!!!

I also started watching The Good Place this month, and it’s so funny? Where has this show been? Kind of a perfect weekend show after a looongngngngngngng week.

And did I mention that I had a ton of coffee this month? (see above video) But I discovered a NEW favorite coffee drink, The Lavender Latte. It’s amazing. Pumpkin Spice has nothing on Lavender Lattes.

By some sort of magic, I was able to completely stay on to of my blogging schedule this month. Now, some of the posts were a little later than I would ideally like. i.e., this post is being published way later than 8am Saturday Morning. (shhhhh, truth be told, I was out getting a Lavender Latte instead of blogging on time)

But even if things were running later in the day, posts still got published! Wow! And the stats went way up? I think part of that is summer drags on stats, and people just don’t read blogs in the summer. But now fall is BACK, and stats skyrocket. (literally)

This is kind of encouraging, especially since I do take time away from sleep to work on this blog. (who am I kidding. It’s not kind of encouraging. It is VERY encouraging)

/// Popular Posts ///

I LOVED my popular posts this month. Not only were they a ton of fun to write, but several of them felt important. Especially, the post on difficult topics in books. I’m so glad so many readers can see life from different perspectives just by reading a book.

Also, I’m just two followers away from 200 subscribers! This is SO! COOL!!!

I was on a book ban this month, and it actually went REALLY successfully. I didn’t buy a single book until today, the very, very last Saturday of the month. And I went to a used bookstore so the books were fairly inexpensive. Yay!

Salt to the Sea – I tried to read this a year or so ago? but it just sat on my library stack, and forgot about reading it. I saw it at the bookstore, and it was not that much, so I decided to take it home. And it’s really, really pretty and blue. I love historical fiction, so I think, I’ll enjoy this book.

An Ember in the Ashes – Do I already own this book? Yes, and yes again. I own the newer editions, and I saw this book on the shelf, and it was the older edition. Since I like this series SO MUCH, I figured owning two copies wouldn’t hurt.

Puddin’ – All I know is Dolly Parton wrote a song for the new Netflix movie based on this book. Of course, I need to read this book. UPDATE: I discovered when linking the Goodreads that this is actually a companion novel? Opps.

Aren’t you glad we live in a world where there are Octobers? – Anne Shirley

I LOVE having an excuse to quote Anne Shirley ALL of October. But seriously, I’m happy about October and pumpkins, and running in corn mazes, and Halloween candy. Except candy corn. I just can’t stand it anymore.

Oh, and my blog in October is going to be super fun! I’m planning a series of How To Blog posts that I think will be pretty helpful and fun!

I’ll also be publishing my October TBR post SOON, if it doesn’t fall down on top of me and bury me.

If you like watching Youtube videos, subscribe to my channel!!! I’ve posted several videos this last month, and I’m going to keep updating that part of my life. It’s similar to my blog, but different? MORE READING FUN, basically. lets chat

aaah looks like you read a lot of great books this month. Also I can never see myself in that debating class because a) public speaking scares me and b) this is weird but I’m really scared to speak my mind. I’m just not comfortable with anything that I write/that comes to my mind.

But really, kudos to you. I can’t even imagine myself in that class <3

    • October 4, 2018 / 8:06 am

Ah, thanks. I’ve never been scared of public speaking, which is super weird! And I definitely have to learn t not speak my mind all the time and listen to other people. 🙂

Aaaaah looks like you had a great reading month!! Also I can never see myself in that debating class because a) public speaking scares me and b) this is kinda weird but I’m comfortable with sharing my thoughts.

But kudos to you also wow that class must have been irritating. I really can’t see myself arguing with those people.

  3. September 30, 2018 / 12:29 pm

Aww, I’m so sorry that your September was rough! (I think all of ours were haha) and noooo I’m so so sorry about your argumentation and debate class — whenever I talk about political topics that almost always have to do with human rights, with the conservatives at my school, I get so frustrated and exhausted. And I’m especially sorry you have to face all this as a survivor when there’s so much going against survivors right now, I’m sending you all my love <3

And YESS I'm so glad you loved Girl Made of Stars! I mean, I'm sure you already know how I feel about it buuuuut I absolutely adore that book ☺ Hope your October is much better!! 💛

    • October 4, 2018 / 8:08 am

Yeah, I think September was not the greatest month. I mean, even turning on the news was triggering. Thanks so much, May. 💕
I hope you have a fantastic October as well!

  4. September 30, 2018 / 2:26 pm

I hope October is better for you than September was!💓I can’t imagine being in that debate class, it sounds infuriating. Also, that Anne Shirley quote is one of my favorites, and I loved seeing it in this post. Thank you for mentioning my post as well, I’m really glad you enjoyed it!

    • October 4, 2018 / 8:08 am

I love Anne Shirley and anything she says!!! And happy October to you!

omg your argumentation class sounds AWFUL! that’s my nightmare, seriously. i have had a do-not-engage rule with political arguments for a whileeee because of how worked up they get me. at least you know you have, y’know, the moral good and whatnot on your side. stay strong though, and put your mental health before your grades!! especially in that situation. <3

so exciting that you're running your campus TV station! wowza. & i'm glad you loved My Plain Jane because it's been on my tbr foreverrrr!! hope your october is less taxing than your september 🙂

    • October 4, 2018 / 8:10 am

Ah, yes, I wish I could NOT engage in political things. But as a journalism major, basically all we do is talk about politics. Most of the time, it’s not too infuriating. But lately? It’s been a mess.
Thanks! I hope October is as lovely as autumn 🙂

I LOVE The Good Place! The new season just premiered and I can’t wait to watch it! I’ve been so busy I had to record it. Also, Salt to the Sea is a great historical fiction book. It took me forever to read it too, but I was quickly thrown into an amazing historical story. I did review it on my blog recently, if you’d like to check it out. I hope you get to it soon because it’s definitely worth reading.

    • October 4, 2018 / 8:10 am

I can’t wait to keep watching the Good Place! I’m only 3 episodes in and I hope I have time to watch more soon!

    • October 4, 2018 / 8:20 am

Yes, I was definitely glad to get quite a bit of reading done in September!

  7. October 3, 2018 / 3:36 pm

For some reason I don’t get notified of your posts?? Lol so that’s the reason I haven’t been commenting erghhh lol I’ll make sure I’m subbed haha. Ugh debate – I don’t think I’d have the patience for that. Especially since so many Americans (especially in the south) have such twisted mindsets. I pray for you! Ha! I love how you got to go to different local coffee shops. OMG so at my local farmer’s market there’s this coffee booth and they have lavender coffee!!! I LOVE it! They also have a blueberry one and it’s so good?? Why is it so rare?? Oh! And since you’re in debate you might like The Benefits of Being An Octopus, a book I recently read. The MC joins a debate club in order to break out of her shell 🙂

    • October 4, 2018 / 8:21 am

Ugh, that’s weird! So many people in the south are stuck in their own little boxes and refuse to look at life from any other perspective?! It’s so annoying! Oh, I wish I could blueberry coffee! I love lavender! And my friend tried rose last time, so next time, I’m ordering a rose latte!
Oh, I’ll have to check out that book!

      • October 4, 2018 / 8:57 am

Oooh rose!! That sounds amazing *heart eyes*

  8. October 4, 2018 / 12:44 pm

Ahhh, I’m so happy you loved Girl Made of Stars. SUCH a fantastic and necessary book. I also read Toil & Trouble last month and enjoyed it! Oh man, I have been in your position re: arguing about basic human decency in classes, and it is absolutely exhausting. It gets tiring trying to justify your (and your friends’) existence/rights to people who are blinded by privilege. I’m glad you’re enjoying your work at the TV station, though! LOVE a good lavender latte– it’s actually super easy to make lavender/rose/other herbal syrups at home, too. I’ve been experimenting with different recipes the past couple of months. I hope your October is off to a great start! <3

  9. October 5, 2018 / 11:18 pm

I have an ARC of Girl Made of Stars but I still haven’t read it!! I’m happy for Octobers because it is my birth month!

  10. October 8, 2018 / 12:04 pm

it’s one of my favorite books????? I wasn’t even expecting it to be, I found it randomly, but then there was so much platonic love????? and everyone was so cute!!!!!! AND A CHARACTER WITH ADHD, SO DIVERSE AND WONDERFUL <3

Drop some knowledge!
