Unpopular Opinion Book Tag

I may be a tiny bit opinionated. And everyone wants to know what I think, right? So we’re doing to do the incredible Unpopular Opinions book tag today. Because somehow, I’ve never done this tag before? *gasps in shock*

So, I have my roommate to thank for this post. Because, apparently I rage about books quite a lot. After midnight, of course, so I don’t remember anything that I said. But she remembers??? (maybe because I was keeping her awake)

So, when I casually mention, I don’t remember what OTP I actually hate? My roomie helpfully says, Oh, didn’t you hate those two characters?

Yes, I did. thanks roommate. Also, she wants her identity to remain a secret. So, my junior year roommate shall remain nameless.

But the lovely gal who shared this tag isn’t nameless! So if you haven’t checked out May’s blog, be sure and do so!

Alright guys, let’s dive into my unpopular opinions!

A popular book/series you didn’t like

The Mortal Instruments

So, I’ve only read City of Glass. But I just don’t like Clary. And I could care less about Jace. I do love the other Shadowhunter books, especially The Infernal Devices. But City of Bones is just dull. And Jace is the WORST. The bad boy persona just comes on too strong.
Did that stop me from buying the 10th anniversary edition of City of Bones? NOPE. Pretty books = temptation.

I just have never gotten this series? Why was it popular? It just comes across as a Hunger Games spin-off, and the world building was a bit too shaky.

A Court of Thorns and Roses

Confession – I did actually love these books 15 months ago. But as I read them through a second time, and thought a bit more about them, I just can’t like them anymore. (Maybe I should write a post about why I’ve fallen out of love with certain books?) So, the magic system doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. And the NA scenes are TOO much. And the complete focus on royalty and almost forced diversity. Problematic and not enjoyable.

a popular book/series that is hated, but you love

Welp. I just don’t know???
I do love the entire Hunger Games series, including Mockingjay.

Also, I adore most classics. Especially A Tale of Two Cities, Pride and Prejudice, and The Scarlet Pimpernel.

a hateable OTP

This was hard, because I do love most OTPs? And hate is such a strong word. I may not like Hermione and Ron, but I don’t hate them.
But my roommate helped me remember. And thinking about these couples, I definitely remember feeling that these guys are pretty much hateable.

Clary and Jace – Why are they such a thing? I’m even annoyed about them in the Dark Artifices. I mean Jace proposed and Clary turned him down because she might die? (Opps, was that a spoiler?) I might actually die if I have to read any more angst with these two.

Tris and Four – BLEH. I legit hate these two.

Cassian and Nesta – Everyone loves Nesta and Cassian, and I just don’t see it? They always squabble and other than being completely mean to each other (And Nesta is just mean to everyone) there’s practically not chemistry.

a popular genre you hardly reach for

Thriller/Mystery – I’ve never gotten into thrillers or mystery. Most of the time I’m bored when I try to read adventure thrillers. Which is weird because bored and thriller should not be in the same sentence.

Romance – I used to read quite a bit of regency romance. But I am just DONE. The character development is almost completely absent. And sexy covers are gag worthy. Really just cannot stand any type of adult romance novel.

Me @ romance novels

a beloved character you do not like

Severus Snape – I kind of understand Snape. But I don’t forgive Snape. And I certainly don’t name my child after Mr. Emotionally Broken.

Jace Herondale – All emo emotion. And sob story. And absolutely jerkery. Noooopppppeeeee.

Gale Hawthorne – Intense emotional outrage and no sense of empathy? PASS.

I might be sensing a theme? Ditching all the emotional dark guys? YES!

a popular author you cannot get into

Jay Kristoff

So, I loved Illuminae. But I just am not enjoying Kristoff’s stand alone books? It might be the writing style or the graphic elements. I’m just not sure.

a popular bookish trope you’re tired of seeing

Bad boy with terrible childhood is actually good.

I will always and forever be done with this trope.
I’m actually writing an entire post on tropes I want to bury at the bottom of the ocean, so I shall save all my hateable tropes till then.

me, trying to gather all the tropes I don’t like.

a popular book/series you have no interest in reading

Shatter Me

The covers just throw me so much?

The Magisterium

It just sounds like a Harry Potter spin off series? I checked it out on Goodreads and it just didn’t really grab me.

I never plan on reading these books. Ever. I completely missed the Twilight phase as a kid. (I was pretty young when they were a Thing™) And I just don’ts ee the need to read these crazy, paranormal books.

a movie/tv show that’s better than the book

Catching Fire

Not all of the Hunger Games movies are better than the book. But I absolutely love the Catching Fire film, and literally cry through any music video from that movie.

Lord of the Rings

I love the Two Towers a lot, but the movies are simply epic. Instantly amazing. And trying to read the book is very slow compared to the movies. Especially, the Fellowship of the Ring. Pages and pages of just walking across some grass.

My two favorite middle movies.

So there you have it! Some of my unpopular (?) opinions. I’m not sure they’re all that unpopular, since I’m pretty sure I’ve seen some of these floating around the internet.

Still, it’s fun to chat about opinions! Feel free to do this tag! Not tagging anyone because I am a certified lazy blogger apparently.

lets chat

What’s some of your unpopular book opinions? Do you disagree with any of mine? Love any of the characters that I hate?

Which OTP makes you gag? What book character do you love to hate on? Have you written a post about your unpopular opinions? Let me know, so I can check it out!

This tag is great. I HATED The Mortal Instruments too. Just so …. terrible. haha! -Ashley

Great answers! I can’t stand Snape! Just because he turned out to be on the right side in the end didn’t mean he wasn’t a bad person!!

  3. May 16, 2018 / 7:54 pm

I basically love all the characters and OTPS you hate xD Buuut I am also not the biggest fan of The Mortal Instruments. I enjoyed the first three but I didn’t think they were super amazing or anything. I plan on reading the rest of Cassandra Clare’s books though to see if they get better as they go along.

  4. May 16, 2018 / 8:30 pm

Haha, yes Jace can choke! I don’t get why so many people love him!
I agree that the Bad boy with terrible childhood is actually good trope is trash – it is so overused and so often completely unnecessary! So often the author goes overboard with their “bad side” and the character becomes lowkey harmful/abusive towars their SO but it’s all okay because they had a bad upbringing/childhood???

  5. May 17, 2018 / 8:23 am

One book I hated that everyone else loved is A Fault in Our Stars. It just wasn’t for me. I haven’t read a lot of the books you mentioned, but I do like the Hunger Games and Divergent.

  6. May 17, 2018 / 11:56 am

I can’t stand the Mortal Instruments series. I enjoyed it when I first started out, but as time went on it just became more and more trashy.

I decided to do the tag to, and have linked back to you 🙂 Awesome, and I could just feel the rage building as I wrote it.

  7. May 19, 2018 / 7:53 pm

This post was great! I agree with you on a lot of things. The Mortal Instruments series was NOT a favorite of me…I did not fall in love with the characters, so that made it unenjoyable. I think I only read the first couple of books, then stopped.😂

AND YES. Just because we understand why Snape did what he did doesn’t make him a good person. I will forever be confused on why J.K. Rowling named Harry’s son after hIM. At least Albus was his first name…

Ahhh, I do not like Gale. At. All. I am an avid member of Team Peeta.

  8. May 19, 2018 / 11:49 pm

I honestly haven’t read most of the books here. However, (now maybe this is truly the unpopular opinion), I really like Tris and Four together! I found their relationship cute. Of course maybe it was because I liked Four a lot more than Tris, but that’s another story. I also do not like Gale. Like at all! I’m not even sure why people even like him.

Ooh I agree with so many of these!😂 I mean I adore the TMI series so I’ll just skim over that lol lol, but I’m so bORED of Divergent, I hate ACOTAR (still salty people call it YA when it’s very obviously adult) and Tris/Four were a really horrible and chemistryless couple. And you’re not missing anything skipping The Iron Trial series. Haha. Oops. And LOTR movies > books. For sure. Those movies were amazing! Also Snape can just go be in a dark hole and I get suspicious of people who love him…he was an abusive horrible villain, and did n o t have to be. I also hate that Dumbledore just let him!! What kind of a school is this…😳😳

  10. May 20, 2018 / 6:51 am

I just don’t get Tris x Four like he threw a knife at her I think? And all of a sudden they’re ~in love~ just ughhh. Also it’s 2018 why do so many people still love Snape 😫 I get liking him as a character, but as a person?? Stop. Please. I’m tired

Drop some knowledge!
