Writing, Some Reading & Finishing College! / April 2019 Wrap Up

We’re four months done with 2019! And only eight months away from the first US presidential primary. #priorities

Anyway, my April was actually PURE CHAOS. Seriously, what a messy, fun month.

I judged high school debate, which we’re going to call an experience.

I finished up all my undergrad classes, cue loud crying and hysterical laughter.

Game of Thrones final season started and with that my heart now lives in terror for my Stark family. AYRA STARK FOREVER.

Yes, I only read six books in April, but believe me, I don’t feel guilty for not reading as much. Ya girl was very busy! Writing, finishing up the semester, packing and did I mention writing? And the books I did get to read? AMAZING.

Wicked Saints ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – my new fantasy obsession! This world building was lush and the characters were so multi-dimensional and I was always guessing. Also, yes, I wrote a review.

On the Come Up ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – WHAT A READ. I WANT THE MIXTAPE. or rap album. I don’t know what it’s called. This book blew my mind. LOVE IT.

Descendant of the Crane ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – What a debut! Chinese inspired game of thrones-esque fantasy politics story. (yes, what a mouthful) Go read it. It’s good.

Red, White, and Royal Blue ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – I KEEP REREADING THIS BOOK. It just makes me happy. And I pre-ordered it and now have a semi-viral tweet for all my fangirling. my favorite read of 2019.

A Gathering of Shadows ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – LOVED THIS next book in the Darker Shade of Magic series. Alucard Emery is a gem.

Daisy Jones and the Six ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – okay, i laughed and cried, and this was just good. Can we get this album, please???

Also yes, I probably would have read a significantly higher number of books if I’d stopped rereading Red, White, and Royal Blue. But, no regrets.

I wrote nearly 30,000 words this month! That’s around 22,000 on my new WIP and 8k on my previous WIP. Adding in extra scenes and editing is actually fun??? who would have thought

Yes, this is a graduation shoot picture. But guess who wrote three books while in college.

This month, writing just flowed. And it hasn’t really flowed for me in a while, so that was really good! My new WIP is SUPER FUN to write and I can just be crazy with it. (and yes, I’ve been super crazy with it. Outlandish ideas for me. i’m just writing all these wacky thing and hoping it works)

And then I was able to get some feedback on my current manuscript from some Beta Readers. and it was so helpful!!!! Beta Readers are a life saver. The truth.

I really like how this edit is looking for this story. It’s helping things come together and putting details into my brain that just… weren’t there before.

Along with a heck ton of writing, i also started researching an agents list. Oh boy. The most exhausting part. So far. Actually writing query letters is the real emotional exhaustion.

I’d really like to keep editing throughout May, reread the draft a few more times, edit a bit more, write some queries, and send those out in late summer. But I’m also planning on taking the LSAT and GRE in late summer SOOOOOO, maybe writing and querying will get shuffled around.

Marie interviewed Jennifer Dugan from Hot Dog Girl, and it was such a fun interview! Also, can’t wait to read Hot Dog Girl!!!!

C.G. Drews, aka Paper Fury, published her second book, The Boy who Steals Houses this month! And she chatted about what writing an Own Voices book is like – and it’s so good, and you should read her thoughts!

Julianna from Paper Blots shared her favorite parts of book blogging, and her list is so lovely!

Oh, and I discovered debut YA author Zach Smedley’s blog and YOU SHOULD CHECK IT OUT! (yes, I’m screaming) anyway, Zach has an incredible series on publishing his debut novel and yes, you all need to read the whole series. I found it super insightful and definitely helpful.

Got my graduation REGALIA! even though I’m graduating in May, not April. But that’s THIS WEEK!!!!

Taylor Swift’s new music. LOVE IT. Also, Cool from the Jonas Brothers is great and they’re releasing an album??? CAN’T WAIT. But really I am probably more excited for another Taylor album. Seven is the number of perfection.

And I’ve discovered AJR and their music is 100/100. It feels like their songs are pulled directly from my brain, I’ve just never felt so seen in music before???

Also, i’m waffling about SO MANY PRESIDENTIAL candidates and y’all i really like Elizabeth Warren. I liked some other people, too, but Warren keeps knocking it out of the park. (why am i telling you this??? I don’t know it just feels very relevant)

AND BEFORE I FORGET, the Bold Type Season Three is my favorite contemporary show on television. I just relate to all these characters so much??? Love Kat, forever. The first episode of season three made me actually sob.

And now drumrollllllll, a quick round up of some of my internet readings this month. Yes, this is new for me to share, but I don’t want to talk just abut books? You know, I want to share what makes me grow and learn. And this was inspired from Elise who always shares the most interesting internet readings each month.

An excellent post from Harpers Bazaar about how male candidates get so much more ridiculous attention than female candidates.

A story that made me outright sob and think, if I could one day write one story this incredible, then my journalism life will be complete. A gripping story from the Santa Fe school shooting. Also, yes, we need gun reform laws now.

Funniest headline of the month. Giant Bird Kills Owner…

This story made me both angry and hopeful that First Nations can take back some of the rights stolen from their tribes.

Can we get more bookstore crawls??? Please, pretty please.

Also, this teen is so inspiring! Applaud her work!

In case anyone didn’t know, I am a Sansa stan. And not too fond of Dany, most of the time I find her entitled. This Vox post points out just some of the political faults i find with Dany. And yes, I an a fan of Missandei and Greyworm and Jorah just not Dany and her decision making.

And if anyone is asking, yes, Vox is probably my favorite media company. I listen to so many hours of Vox podcasts and read their website for hours.

And please let me get into grad school and work there in four years or so. please.

Oh there’s such cool news this month!!! Normally I totally forget to do this section but this month there was SUCH COOL NEWS!

Queen of Nothing is coming out in November instead of January! YESSSSSS, this is the content I like to see. Kudos to an incredibly hard working author.

In other news, this new book and cover from Anne-Marie has stolen my soul. I need this book. (but it’s a whole year away??? why, sobs)

And Becky Albertalli announced a new book with Aisha Saeed, YES, NO, MAYBE SO. no cover yet, but it’s coming out the day after my birthday, so yay for me!!!  And it looks and sounds so good! Quick secret, I met Becky last October and she mentioned that she was working on this book! So, I’ve been waiting for months to hear more!

Other good news, Blood Heir has been reworked and will be published in November, yay!!! Amazing work from this debut author to deal with criticism in a good way for her story.

And that about sums up my April!

Yes, we’re not posting a blogging section this month. Mainly, because I haven’t been able to blog much AT ALL, and my blog now lives on all the views from my Queen of Air and Darkness review. (seriously people keep googling spoilers and reading my review??!!???)

I did want to blog more but pretty much ALL my creative energy went into WIP writing. Every spare moment, I was either writing or thinking about the next Game of Thrones episode. Yes, Westerosi politics is very distracting. #sorrynotsorry

lets chat

Look at me, actually publishing this on time! That’s how you end a chaotic month. Posting a post on time. Now, back to the press room for questions. Nope, I didn’t conspire with anyone to get that A on my internship or get a job at Disney (had to mention my new disney job at least once, it’s in my contract)

NOW for actual questions, how was YOUR april? Are you a fan of Taylor’s new music? Have you listened to AJR?

Have you checked out the Bold Type? who do you want to sit on the Iron Throne? (don’t comment with the wrong answer or I’ll send Arya to haunt your dreams) Have you gotten to watch Endgame yet? (I HAVEN’T, NO SPOILERS!)

I KNOW On the Come Up was so good!! And I hope that the query letters, LSAT, and GRE go very very well :)) Ohh I just listened and found out about AJR this week-what a coincidence! It’s because they did a song with the singer Ingrid Michaelson called The Lotto. Also, have you heard about the new documentary on Netflix called Knock Down the House? YES, I have watched Endgame. :))

Drop some knowledge!
